Radiocarbon Dating of Ground Water

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Radiocarbon dating of ground water is used in combination with the primary measurements of classical hydrological and chemical analyses. Radiocarbon dating will produce the best results when it involves multiple measurements or sequential sampling. The most useful data come from these comparisons and not from absolute ages. In the case of multiple measurements, the apparent ages of the ground water taken from pumps that are at varying distances from the aquifer outcrop could be a means of verifying flow rate and also indicate situations of overpumping. In the case of sequential sampling of an individual well every six or twelve months, any changes in the apparent age of the water are plotted versus time. In particular, if the age of the water is getting younger with time, it would usually be due to a drawing-down of the more shallow water layers. Radiocarbon dating has the potential of giving advance notice of impending contamination by surface layer waters.

Fifty Years of Radiocarbon Dating

The history of radiocarbon dating through the 20th century is presented, focusing on the work of Willard F. Libby, who introduced radiocarbon dating in 1949, and its application during the following 50 years. Topics include an explanation of radiocarbon dating, by which the age of organic matter can be determined; difficulties Libby encountered in developing processes for accurate measurements;...

Ages of Quaternary pluvial episodes determined by uranium-series and radiocarbon dating of lacustrine deposits of Eastern Sahara

As documented by radiocarbon dating and geoarchaeological investigations, the now hyperarid northwestern Sudan and southwestern Egypt experienced a period of greater effective moisture during early and middle Holocene time, about 10-5 ka. We have used the uranium-series technique to date lacustrine carbonates from Bir Tarfawi, Bir Sahara East, Wadi Hussein, Oyo Depression, and the Great Selima ...

Constructing deposition chronologies for peat deposits using radiocarbon dating

Radiocarbon dating is one of the main methods used to establish peat chronologies. This article reviews the basis of the method and its application to dating of peat deposits. Important steps in the radiocarbon dating procedure are described, including selection and extraction of material (and fractions) for dating, chemical and physical preparation of media suitable for measurements, measureme...

Instruments and Methods Towards radiocarbon dating of ice cores

A recently developed dating method for glacier ice, based on the analysis of radiocarbon in carbonaceous aerosol particles, is thoroughly investigated. We discuss the potential of this method to achieve a reliable dating using examples from a midand a low-latitude ice core. Two series of samples from Colle Gnifetti (4450ma.s.l., Swiss Alps) and Nevado Illimani (6300ma.s.l., Bolivian Andes) demo...

Use of uranium^thorium dating to determine past 14C reservoir e¡ects in lakes: examples from Antarctica

The chronologies of many lacustrine records suffer from radiocarbon reservoir effects due to the presence of dissolved `dead' carbon or to slow air^water exchange. Here we use the TIMS uranium^thorium disequilibrium method, in conjunction with AMS radiocarbon dating, to determine the age of lacustrine carbonates and to quantify the past radiocarbon reservoir effect in two Antarctic lakes with d...
